Hello and welcome to the Social Studies Newsletter! A place to share the work of visiting artists, highlight local artwork and events, and to say hello to our friends near and far. Our aim is to give you a monthly (we will really try our best!) update to what’s been happening.
If you’re new to Social Studies, feel free to check out The Website Link to see what we’re all about.
Upcoming Fall Residents
We’re trying it out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As many of you know, we’re both full-time public school teachers and the Fall can be pretty busy (or, well… all of the school year?). We felt really good about the balance in our Spring/Summer sessions the past couple of years and felt like it was time to try out a Fall season.
We’re grateful to have Trevor Dahm and Sarah McColl join us in October!
Trevor Dahm - October 13-19
Social Studies is proud to collaborate and partner with the Sacramento State Photography Department and Professor Eliza Gregory for our inaugural Social Studies Residency + Sacramento State Photography student residency scholarship. This is an opportunity being offered to a 2024 graduate of the Sac State Photo Program to attend Social Studies this Fall.
Our first recipient is Trevor Dahm! Dahm describes himself as an explorer, photographer, and storyteller from the Yuba-Sutter area. Growing up in a small town means he has an eye for the odd or the unmistakably unique. His personal work consists of extensive research projects on time and periods of change often framed within the industrialization of California through an artistic lens. His most recent body of work is about people and how they live in a world impacted by so many forces outside their control. Not only to exist but to live, interact, and change the world.
We’re excited to host Trevor this October and plan for an Open House on Friday October 18. Check our Instagram for updates and details closer to the event!
Sarah McColl - October 27 - November 2
Our second Fall resident will be writer Sarah McColl.
Sarah McColl is the author of the memoir, JOY ENOUGH (Liveright Publishing/Norton, 2019). She also writes LOST ART, a monthly newsletter about the creative work of (mostly) dead women, and was a finalist for a 2023 Andy Warhol Artist Writers Grant.
Her essays have appeared in Paris Review, McSweeney's, StoryQuarterly, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of fellowship awards from In Cahoots, Millay Colony for the Arts, Ucross Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Wrangell Mountains Center and MacDowell, where she was named the 2017 Mary Carswell Fellow.
Before receiving her MFA at Sarah Lawrence College, she was the founding editor in chief of Yahoo Food. Her food writing has been featured in print and online for Bon Appétit, House Beautiful, The Guardian, Food52, Modern Farmer, Extra Crispy and others. She teaches creative writing and lives in Northern California.
We plan to host an Open House on Friday November 1… we’d love to see you there!
Design Week Sacramento
We are also so excited to have been invited by Justina Martino of Art Tonic to participate in Design Week Sacramento this year!
Social Studies will be participating in a panel discussion called “Exploring Artist Residencies” with recent resident Ashley Ortiz-Diaz and others Sacramento-based folks. Although we’re still feeling like little, baby, fledgling, residency facilitators, we are honored to share the stage and talk about our experiences over the last few years.
The discussion will take place on Wednesday October 16, 6-8 pm. You can RSVP to attend the talk here.
Social Studies @ the Colusa County Arts Council
Finally, our annual Social Studies Residency Exhibition, Time and Space, hosted by the Colusa County Arts Council is still on view until October 24th.
The CCAC gallery is open Monday - Thursday from 12-5 pm. If you want a weekend visit… hit us up and we can try to help find a time!
The Spring + Summer Session was such a wonderful group of artists ranging from local Sacramento, the East Bay, and even LA! Links to their socials are below.
Alright.
Thanks for reading.

And thanks for your support.
